Overview

Like Shootout at Zed’s, The Galactic Corps has been built to add value to the game no matter how you play – co-op/competitive, narrative/generic, board game/advanced skirmish game.

You can play through the missions in the box as part of an ongoing campaign, or you can add the Security Wardens, the new terrain or the Galactic Corps themselves to any mission you wish. You can even play through the narrative campaigns from the rulebook or other expansions for a second time, but this time with the added threat of the Corps for extra replayability! Some missions (such as Gentrify the District in the Shootout at Zed’s expansion) even have rules for using the Corps built into the narrative.

The Galactic Corps expansion focuses on adding some discipline to your games. No longer can you run around looting places willy-nilly. That’s a crime you know! The Security Wardens, Galactic Guards, Juggernaut and Galactic Director are four new types of NPC controlled by the game’s AI, and while they will attack the Purge like everyone else, they will also attack (and arrest!) your Traders! Let’s find out what you get in the box:

The Miniatures

The Galactic Corps comes with eight new miniatures; every one of them a unique sculpt.

The Galactic Guards are the numerous nameless henchmen, highly trained, highly disciplined, but expendable and not so well armoured.

Juggernauts are chemically enhanced soldiers, heavily armed and armoured, employed only to do the bidding of the Galactic Director, a ruthless strategist and powerful adversary.

Security Wardens are not part of the Corps; they are locally appointed police or guards for hire. They will question and search your Traders and generally be a thorn in your side, controlled by the brand-new Security Die in the box. This works just like the Chance Die that controls the Civilians, but with some new results.

The Boards

Every character comes with a double-sided character board just like the Traders in the core game and crew boosters. Unlike other characters however, these ones cannot be used as Traders. Instead you’ll find their standard NPC rules on one side of the board, and ‘Elite’ versions on the other side – just another way to up the difficulty if you want to make your games more of a challenge!

Also unlike other characters, the Galactic Corps do not come with Class Boards. Instead they come with ‘Apprehended’ boards – these are placed over the dashboards of Traders to show that they have been arrested. If their comrades can’t free them from their bonds by the end of the game the crew will have to either pay their bail or lose them for a number of missions while they serve their time!

Like all Core Space characters you will get new equipment tokens too – a total of 11 in the box. This equipment is not specific to any characters and can be mixed in with the tokens from the main game and other Core Space sets for your Traders to find or purchase.

Want a makeshift Juggernaut? The Riot Fist is a new Rare item that not only gives you a pretty effective ranged weapon, but can also be used to punch people in the face. Remember that this unarmed combat value can also be used for Knock Back rolls, allowing your Traders to clear areas much more easily. The expansion also comes with the Time Pulse Grenade that can freeze an enemy in place, and of course the Jump Pack! This will give a Trader a quick burst of speed and make scaling multi-level terrain a total breeze!

New Campaign

In the book you will find two new missions to play through with your Trader crew that will introduce some new challenges and objectives. You can play the missions co-operatively, competitively or solo, and they can be easily added into existing campaigns as ‘side-quests’.

  • In It’s a Raid, your Traders are interrupted in the middle of a lucrative deal. You must retrieve your weapons and escape before the Galactic Corps teleport in and arrest your whole crew!
  • In Hold the Fort, instead you must work with the Corps. They have seconded you to keep a nearby settlement and its civilians safe from the Purge until they can arrive, but they’re not in the area and you’re running out of air…

New Terrain

This wouldn’t be a Battle Systems product without some new terrain! The Particle Transmitter allows characters to teleport in and out from the middle of the board, which can play havoc with your plans when it comes to defending entry points! It is also a great focus for a mission objective as seen in our latest free mission download, Particular Transmission.

You will also get a full sheet of scatter terrain, with extra crates and equipment perfect for staying in cover with all the extra bullets flying around!

The Event Cards

So, how do you add the Corps to your regular games, without the narrative of the campaign to drive the story? Well firstly you can use the flipside of your Hostility Tracker – you’ll see a Galactic Guard icon in the Charge section that will bring them onto the board.

That’s not all though. The final component of the expansion is a set of Event Cards that can be shuffled into your deck when you want to use the Galactic Corps. Some cards will bring extra Guards onto the board or even the full force of the Corps! Others like Galactic Spy will see a Civilian reveal themselves as an undercover cop, and the Security Checkpoint card sees the local Security Wardens ransack your ship’s hold while you’re not there!

Particular Transmission

This month the Galactic Corps arrive on the scene. This new Core Space expansion adds the Galactic Corps and Security Wardens as new NPCs, along with the usual host of scenery, equipment, cards, rules and missions.

2019-11-04 Blog Mission Monday Juggernaut

Juggernauts are powerful and heavily armed; the hammer of the Corps used to bludgeon and punish any disobedient populace. They are often large men who have been chemically enhanced or have a mutation, normally in favour of size and aggression at the expense of intellect.

This week’s mission has your Traders break into a Galactic Corps facility. It sounds dangerous, but the rewards are well worth the risk. If you can salvage some parts from their top-of-the-range Particle Transmitter you can upgrade your ship’s teleporter for a sure-fire means of extraction in future games. You might find yourself some valuable contraband in their evidence room too!

Underworld Infiltration

This month saw the release of Shootout at Zed’s, a Core Space expansion featuring the criminal gangers, a new type of NPC.

By now your Traders will be pretty experienced at fighting the Purge, so we thought what better way to show off the gangs than to give them centre-stage? That’s right, this week’s mission does not use the Purge at all!

Whatever Chunk started life as he is now just a huge, drug fuelled meat-puppet, who does what Zed tells him and questions nothing but his next fix. This unhappy creature is the fusion of both technology and medication at the far end of ‘experimental’. A pet project of Zed’s, Chunk is never far from his side and will fly into a berserker rage at the merest nod from his master.

You may think gangers are squishier than the Purge so it doesn’t sound like much of a challenge, but there’s a catch. You’re in their territory, and you’re heavily outnumbered from the start. You’ll need to stay cool and try to avoid detection as you search the area for some important documents.

Core Space – Multi-Level Gaming

Battle Systems has been making gaming terrain for many years now, so when we finally got around to doing a game it would have been silly not to use it!

Core Space comes with the single-level, dungeon-crawler-style Cyberpunk Terrain, allowing us to keep the mechanics of the core game simple and focus on the narrative and the campaign. Many of our other terrain sets however have multiple levels and a far wider variety of scatter terrain, perfect to scratch that skirmish gaming itch. But how do you get around the board?

Those with the Deluxe Rulebook will know that there is an extensive section on Advanced Rules. These rules are absolutely not necessary to enjoy everything the core game has to offer, but if you’ve mastered the basic set-up and want to take your games to the next level 😉 you can add as few or as many of these rules in as you wish.

This section of the book includes rules for climbing, jumping, falling, and even diving through windows! Stairs can be climbed as part of normal movement, whereas ladders take longer to scale and require Traders to use their valuable actions. Other scenery (such as tables and crates) can also be climbed on to gain a better vantage point.

Jumping, either down from a higher level or across a gap between platforms, is done with a simple dice roll modified by the character’s ability. Succeed and you can carry on with your turn, but fail and you will fall and potentially take damage!

Scramble: you may have seen this symbol on some of the character boards. This represents a character’s ability to jump and climb. The top number is the height or width of items that a character can move across as part of normal movement, effortlessly leaping up or over them. The bottom number is the distance that a character can safely jump with fear of falling.

Most characters won’t have more than 1s and 2s for this ability, but you may notice that the Purge have values as high as 5! In real terms this means that multi-level boards are far less restrictive to the Purge than they are to your Traders – while you are climbing down ladders and dodging obstacles, they are vaulting railings and leaping from floor to floor without slowing down. This relentless pursuit makes them all the more scary!

Multi-level terrain is more than just going up or down though. All the different floors and ceilings and struts and angles will provide far denser cover to keep you safe from flying bullets. You’ll also have more avenues of escape – you can now go over or under your enemy as well as just going around them.

The Core Space rules are intentionally left open for more of an RPG feel, and this means that you can also assign extra rules to your games to suit the terrain that you’re using. One example given in the book is the use of elevators. Our Frontier and Galactic sets come with grav-lift platforms as well as special clips that allow you to attach the platform to different floors. Traders can use actions to call or operate the lift – it will often be quicker than climbing and safer than jumping! That’s just one example though – you can do whatever you want to suit your collection.

Line of sight can be trickier to deal with on a multi level board!

Elevator clips are one of many things you’ll find in our terrain sets to help with gaming on multiple levels. All of our upper floors are designed so that they do not clip onto the lower ones (unless you want them to of course). Instead, the plastic clips slot into grooves in the walls below so that each floor can be lifted off, allowing access to the one below. Just don’t forget where your models are!

The sets also come with plenty of stairs and ladders. The stairs are designed so that your miniatures’ bases can be placed on the steps, avoiding any awkward issues if characters end their turn halfway up the stairs. Ladders can be used in tighter spaces – you may just need to decide that certain floor tiles can be used as hatches if there is no more obvious access.

You may think it’s intimidating to build a large multi-level terrain set for each specific mission, but don’t worry. Core Space is flexible enough that you can build the terrain however you like and adapt the mission to that. As long as you keep any objectives equidistant from each player, and make sure the Traders have enough time to reach them before the hostility gets too high, the game will work just fine.

You can even take the existing missions from the Starter Set or from the Mission Monday archives and put them on a multi-level board. Maybe drop the hostility a little so you’ve got more time to explore, but otherwise just build your map, and then build another map on top of it!

Power Outage

We recently relaunched our sci-fi terrain range, and we added some brand new kits including the Engineering Sector:

Engineering Sector Components

This set is a perfect centrepiece for themed missions in an industrial area or the inner workings of a space station. Today’s new mission does just that.

To play this mission you will need the Core Space Starter Set and the Engineering Sector terrain pack.

The terrain is fully interactive – this mission involves the Traders taking control of the cargo-bot shown above to repair the damaged engine core of a space station by retrieving parts from industrial equipment scattered around the board. Of course it won’t be that simple – the Purge will be bearing down on you from the start!

If you have the Deluxe Rulebook you can take advantage of some of the advanced rules as well. The Engineering Sector is a two-storey kit, so your Traders can jump (or fall) off of the gantry, and use the upper level as a great vantage point for shooting.

Get to the Shuttle!

Get to the Shuttle! is a mini-expansion for Core Space that introduces a brand-new piece of terrain, and mode of transport! It’s released in September 2019.

Overview

First and foremost, this is a cool space ship! It can be used as a vehicle or a stationary terrain piece in almost any sci-fi game you can think of. It’s got a chunky, functional design that will be at home in most gritty settings.

It’s got a detailed interior and removable roof for RPGs and skirmish games, the wings come off for easy storage, and it’s light enough to put on a flying stand should you wish to.

If that wasn’t enough for less than £10, it’s an expansion for Core Space too! It includes rules for using it in game and two new missions to play.

The Shuttle

The Shuttle is built with the same high quality arwork and from the same strong, high-density card as the rest of our range, so the finished kit looks great and is very sturdy.

Get to the Shuttle Contents

This is a slightly more advanced kit than most of our terrain as some pieces like the engines and intakes do require glue. It’s still easy if you know what you’re doing, and once you’ve watched this tutorial video, you will!

The Shuttle measures 18cm long with a wingspan of 21cm.

This is a very flexible kit. It can be built as a solid piece, leaving all the doors and windows in place for an enclosed vehicle. However, if you want to make it more interactive you can easily fit miniatures inside, and the cockpit chair has been designed to pop in and out so you can replace it with a mini. There is a even slot in the chassis  underneath the back door allowing you to slide the open door in and use it as a ramp!

Using the Shuttle in Core Space

The Shuttle can be purchased between games like a piece of equipment, and is stored in your ship’s hold, taking up cargo space. At 90UA it is pricey, but it can also be rented at just 7UA per game. There’s a discount for purchasing it after the rental period, just like buying your company car :-P.

It can be used in game in multiple ways:

The Emergency Extraction rules allow the Shuttle to fly in an rescue your crew from tight situations. A Trader has to use actions to call it in, and then it will arrive at the end of the round. Once it turns up, it is scattered randomly, to represent it finding the nearest roof or open space to gain access. If the Traders can get to its landing position, they can escape the board without having to return to their airlock.

It can be used between games too. In the Extraction Phase it can be used to mount a rescue mission, deploying in a similar way to the above, allowing you to save a stranded crewmate. In the Trade Phase one of your Traders can use it to visit a distant trading post, allowing you to purchase from two stores per phase instead of one. Finally in the Maintenance Phase you can use it to gain easy access to the outside of your main ship to make some free repairs.

There is also an optional rule to use the Shuttle for deployment in custom missions, especially those set outside using our Outlands terrain.

Finally, the rulebook includes two brand-new missions:

  • Shuttle Run can be added into a campaign to allow players to pick up a Shuttle. In the mission they will need to meet a contact and persuade them to lend you a shuttle to escape an area overrun with the Purge. The result of your negotations will give you the shuttle for the following few games at a discounted rate!
  • Get to the Shuttle can be used as an alternate ending to another mission or campaign for crews that have already purchased a shuttle. It’s a gauntlet-style scenario where you are cut off from your ship and must make your way across two mats to the shuttle bay to escape before the station explodes! It can also be played as a standalone mission for when you want a challenge!

Shootout at Zed’s

Shootout at Zed’s is the latest expansion for Core Space, our sci-fi miniatures game, and is released in September 2019. Read on to find out more.

Overview

Core Space is pretty open when it comes to gameplay. It can be a tight ‘board’ game sticking strictly to the core rules or using the grid on the floor for movement, or can be a looser dynamic skirmish game that will see you ducking down to the table to check your lines of sight and making the most of your effortless actions to dive for cover. With the advanced rules in place, anything goes – the game is fully customisable and can be played like an RPG, even using a GM if you wish!

My point is that Core Space has lots of moving parts and ways to play. Our Core Space expansions have therefore been structured to add value across the board. You can play Shootout at Zed’s as a standalone campaign, but every component in the box can also be integrated with the starter set to expand your gameplay.

This expansion zooms in on the criminal underworld of the Perseus Arm, focusing on the dastardly Zed and his gang of felons. Gangers are a brand-new NPC controlled by the game’s AI. Like Civilians, Gangers can be useful as a speed bump for the Purge, but unlike Civilians Gangers will attack you too! Let’s find out what you get in the box:

Hobb, Milly and Razor are the lowest of low-lifes, the sadistic criminal henchmen that you must fight your way through to get to the boss.

Evangeline and Chunk are Zed’s lieutenants, one an elite hired assassin, the other a drug-fuelled augmented berserker. They are led by Zed himself, a harsh man reminiscent of criminal gang bosses from many films.

The expansion also comes with two new Civilians, Ooma and Treva, innocent bystanders who live in a rough neighbourhood.

The Boards

Every character comes with a double-sided character board just like the Traders in the core game and crew boosters. On one side you’ll find their NPC rules, either Ganger or Civilian, and on the other they have full Trader stats.

Note that as fully functioning Traders this means that Zed’s gang can be used as a complete Trader crew if you wish, adding a seventh one to your collection! You’ll get a Ship Board for them in the box in case you want to use them this way. The individual gangers can also be hired to join your other crews.

You’ll also get Class Boards, also double-sided, so you can mix and match roles as you wish. You could hire more augmented crew like Chunk, or you may decide to take Ooma as a Technician.

Like all Core Space characters you will get new equipment tokens too – a total of 22 in the box. This equipment is not specific to the characters and can be mixed in with the tokens from the main game and other Core Space sets for your Traders to find or purchase.

Of particular note are the Power Claw with an incredible four close assault dice – suddenly that Live One doesn’t look so tough! The Outlands Hatchet is a rare item that can also be thrown for three dice in desperate circumstances. The Teleport Grenade can be enormous fun. Anyone hit by it will be randomly teleported a few inches away. Move an opposing Trader away from an item you want to nab, or even use it on your own crew to get them out of a dangerous situation!

New Campaign

The Shootout at Zed’s campaign consists of three exciting new missions for you to play through with your Trader crew that will introduce some new challenges and objectives. All of the missions can be played co-operatively or solo, although you might squabble with the other players over the loot!

  • In Gentrify the District your crew is seconded by the local magistrates to venture into gang territory and clear out the criminals, including Zed himself. It won’t be easy though, as he’s fortified the building and the Purge entry points are between you and him!
  • In Blockade, after clearing out Zed’s gang you need to get back to your ships, but the surviving gangers won’t let you leave that easy! The criminals have picked the area clean before you arrived so there’s no loot to find either, unless you can pry it from the Gangers’ cold dead hands…
  • Finally, in Truce the area is under attack from a massive Purge invasion and your only hope is to make peace with the Gangers and get them to help with the defence. There are Civilian informants in the area who might have some dirt on Zed that will blackmailing him into helping you a bit easier.

New Terrain

This wouldn’t be a Battle Systems product without some new terrain! Zed’s Bar is the first set in the Core Space range with a floor tile and a ladder to give you a second level to your board (which you can of course do with all our other terrain sets).

Even when not playing the Shootout campaign, this is a perfect centrepiece for your board when making your own missions. It is also used in some of our Mission Monday free downloads such as the Titan Accord.

The mezzanine overlooks the main room of the venue, with a bar, TV, partition wall for the VIP area and snazzy entrance struts. Just add the tables and chairs from the starter set and the look is complete.

The Event Cards

So, Gangers sound great, don’t they? But what if you want to add them to your regular games, without the narrative of the campaign to drive the story? Well firstly you can use the flipside of your Hostility Tracker – you’ll see a Ganger icon in the Watch Your Back section that will bring them onto the board and cause trouble.

Some cards will bring extra gangers onto the board or give them extra actions and make them more of a threat. Others like Minor Felons will see Civilians joining the gang, and the Power Struggle card will see a turf war break out right in front of you. Better get out of the way!
